Learn 'em Young

Do you remember the first time you lied to your parents? I was five. Ok, maybe it wasn't the first time but it did result in one of my mom's favorite stories about me as a kid. (Or maybe the other way around: one of my favorite stories she told about me :)

I came home from kindergarten at St. Mary's and went to my room to change. When I came back down my mom asked if I had hung up my dress, which I had. Then she asked if I'd hung up my slip. I said yes, even though it was lying on the floor of my closet. (If you are too young to know what a slip is, google it).

Without batting an eye, she told me to promise her I'd done it or go back upstairs and hang it up. I turned around, taking one step at a time, pounding the stairs with my tiny palms, cursing and muttering under my breath She recalled hearing me say son of a bitch, over and over. She didn't hear anything else because she didn't want me to see how hard she was laughing. Aaah, memories.
